Sachin Tendulkar became the first cricketer in history to be given out by the third umpire on this day. This was the start of using technology to help make decisions in cricket. This iconic match between India and South Africa took place at Kingsmead, Durban, during India’s tour of South Africa.
During India’s first innings, Sachin Tendulkar was batting and looking for a quick single. One of the best fielders in the game, Jonty Rhodes, made a lightning-fast throw to the stumps. It was a very close call, and for the first time in international cricket, the field umpire referred the decision to the third umpire. Using TV replays, the third umpire judged that Sachin was short of the crease, and he was given out. The moment was significant because it was the first-ever decision made using television technology in cricket.

Third Umpire:
The third umpire is an off-field umpire used in cricket matches. When the players or the two on-field umpires refer questions to them, it is their responsibility to decide on them in the end. If necessary, the third umpire can also serve as an emergency on-field umpire. It was the brainchild of Dr Ali Bacher, the former Managing Director of the United Cricket Board of South Africa, and Mike Demaine, the senior cricket producer at the South African Broadcasting Television sports department.
This idea was first introduced in Test cricket in November 1992 at Kingsmead, Durban, during the South Africa vs. India series. Karl Liebenberg was the third umpire, with Cyril Mitchley the on-field umpire, who referred the run-out decision in this match. Sachin Tendulkar became the first batsman to be dismissed run out by using television replays on the second day of the Test, scoring 11. The third umpire is appointed from the Elite Panel of ICC Umpires or the International Panel of ICC Umpires.

Sachin Tendulkar made his Test Cricket debut against Pakistan on November 15, 1989. He is commonly known as the “Master Blaster and has so many records to his name. He had a monumental journey in international cricket. He has a career spanning 200 Tests, 15921 runs with 51 centuries, in addition to 18426 runs with 49 centuries in 463 ODIs. He has the most runs in Tests and ODIs. He is the first player to hit 100 international centuries, and he is also the first player to score 200 runs in ODI cricket.
In addition to his run-making capability, Sachin Tendulkar enthralled audiences all around the world with his amazing strokeplay. After making his debut on November 15, 1989, he announced his retirement on November 14, 2013, in the series against West Indies in Wankhede Stadium in Mumbai. He is the youngest and first sportsperson to get the Bharat Ratna in 2014. He was also nominated to the Rajya Sabha in 2012 and given the honorary rank of group captain by the Indian Air Force.

Rahul Dravid is an Indian former cricket player, ex-captain, and ex-coach of the Indian national cricket team. He is well known for his outstanding batting technique. He scored 24,177 runs in international cricket and is widely regarded as one of the greatest batsmen in the history of cricket. He is frequently referred to as The Wall and is recognised by his nickname, Mr. Dependable. He guided the Indian team to victory in the 2024 ICC Men’s T20 World Cup as the head coach.
He made his international debut on 3 April 1996 in an ODI against Sri Lanka. In the test, he has scored 13288 runs with 36 centuries in 164 matches, and in ODIs, he scored 10889 runs in 344 matches. He retired from ODI and Twenty20 International cricket in August 2011, and from Test cricket the following year. In July 2018, he became the fifth Indian cricketer to be inducted into the ICC Hall of Fame. He was awarded the Padma Shri in 2004 and the Padma Bhushan in 2013 by the Government of India.
Sunil Gavaskar:
Sunil Gavaskar was the first batsman to pass 10,000 runs in Test cricket and is acknowledged as one of the greatest opening batsmen of all time. He held the record for the highest number of test centuries before Sachin Tendulkar went past him in 2005. In 125 test matches, he scored 10122 runs with 34 centuries. Gavaskar received the Padma Bhushan award in 1980 for his successful international cricket career. He was inducted into the ICC Cricket Hall of Fame in 2009.
